Topical Fluoride treatment (which involves the application of a special varnish containing a higher level of fluoride to the teeth) is recommended for children from the age of one. It increases the resistance of the enamel to tooth decay and has been shown to reduce the incidence of decay by up to 37% over the effect of toothpaste and water fluoridation alone. Paediatric Dental Specialists recommend two applications per year where there is normal decay risk and four applications per year in children where a high decay risk is assessed.

Medical Card Entitlements Patients who are 16 years old and older that have their own full medical card are entitled to a range of dental treatments which are funded by the HSE.

Free entitlements include:

One free examination per year (ie 2017). This includes full mouth examination

 and Oral Cancer check.

Up to two fillings per year.

Whatever extractions are required.

Prescriptions.

Denture repairs and additions(Where possible these

will  be done on the day).

 

Dentures can be provided subject to the dentist

obtaining approval

from the HSE Principal Dental Officer.

Patients with certain medical conditions(Such as

Diabetes) may be able to have more

extensive treatment subject to the

dentist getting approval from the HSE

Principal Dental Officer.

This may include:

Whatever fillings they need.

Scaling and polishng or Periodontal

treatment.
